In our case, Matt hosts our server (which costs him money... thanks again Matt!) and we use Vent clients.
If your friend wants to join our group, then he'll just need a Vent client (the same version as us) and the Vent login details.
If you guys just want to use it privately between the two of you, then you'll probably need to set up your own Vent server. Telstra has gaming services that offer Vent servers and there are other companies too. Otherwise I'd just run some VOIP program like Skype in the background, which is free.

Vent gives away a free server product but limits it to 8 people connected at once. You are more than welcome to use this server as much as you like. (Except when its full on our run nights!) In fact, we might need to get a commercial server as our guild increases in size... They generally only cost about $5 a month (for 20 users) though so it ain't much.
The hostname and password for our vent server is in the Guild Information tab inside wow. He won't be in the guild so he wont be able to see it, but you can.

I think Boorunn may be a guild officer already, in which case you can guild invite Scott yourself, by typing '/ginvite Antonszandor'. Otherwise I can guild invite when I next see you online. Also, if you want help powerlevelling through ZF or similar, just ping me next time (I'll probably be on Confluence). I'm happy to run you through.
