Tired of getting pwned by a Mob when their aggravation ("aggro") should be going on the Tank instead?
In a perfect world, the mob(s) should be hitting the Tank. Tanks have lots of armour and have the attention of the Healer. All other players should keep their aggro below that of the Tank, which lowers the probability they'll be hit and means they live longer (and don't require attention from the Healer).
A good way to cause damage without attracting aggro is to use the 'Assist Target' function:
- Select your Tank by clicking on the Tank or their portrait on the side of the screen
- Press the 'F' key
- This will direct your Target to the same mob that the Tank is targeting
- If it's the start of a fight, wait a bit for the Tank to build up aggro
- Then attack the mob
In theory, the Tank should have lots of aggro from the mob they're targeting. If you do damage to the same mob, it's less likely that the mob will turn on you, since the Tank hopefully has more aggro on the Target than you.
Just be sure to wait long enough for the Tank to get the aggro. They normally have special abilities to make this happen.
An easy way to know who has the most aggro on a mob is to look at where the mob is facing. If you mob turns to face you as you run around them, then you're the target! So, it can be helpful to stand on different sides of a mob to see this change. Also, you can turn on "Show Target of Target" in the UI settings, which shows who the mob is targeting whenever you target the mob.
