Run Summary

This was our first Progression team run ever. Of the six people who signed up for the team five turned up, plus Boorunn. Boorunn did not sign up but Guild members will always be welcomed, no encouraged to come on these runs if they are on. I want to have the same ten each week, but while we are still filling up numbers, other guild member and pugs will fill the numbers.

It's absolutely essential that you come prepared to these fights. That means:

  • reading or watching you tube videos on how they work,
  • turning up with some gold or flasks of your own
  • turning up fulling repaired

If you haven't done this you will be prioritised under a pug who knows the fight. This includes guildies who haven't signed up but ask to come at the last minute, we all need to understand the fight mechanics if we want to keep progressing. Seems harsh? Discus it in the comments of this page.

It took three attempts to get this encounter completed successfully.

This attempt went ok for a first run. We wiped on the two snakes, I can't remember exactly what caused the wipe, I suspect it was a communication issue around the handling of the two debuffs.

Calypto went DC, we waited about 15 minutes then decided to replace, sorry Cally! Thatrayna swapped to Zunoz DPS and we pugged a new priest healer (Taimh).

We made this attempt pretty much intact into the third round and were looking good until Icehowl's charge hit one of our healers, enraged, one shotted Furgin then went and ate all the DPS.

We did recover however and from my vantage point on the ground I was witness to one of the most impressive tanking+healing displays I've ever seen in World of Warcraft.

At about 500k health left I think there was Taihm, Zunoz and Atlassia left. Zunoz got frozen at about 350k and passed into the next world. Then Atlassia and Taimh worked the mechanics of this fight perfectly and over about 10 minutes brought Icehowl down to about 80k health when Taimh got frozen and Atlassia only just didn't make it past a nasty burst of damage. Vent was loud with chatter and congratulations, it was an awesome display.

We made this attempt into the third phase with only the hunter (missagility) down to some unlucky debuff management and some heals that JUST didn't make it. Two of Icehowl's charges made contact, resulting in a dead tank (Furgin), one dead heal (Taimh), and one or two dead dps. Zunoz started healing and we downed this monkey of a boss.

Onyxia

Took three goes to down Onyxia which is a bit of a shame. First wipe happened on a NOOB tank pull on the adds.

Second wipe happened in the first Onyxia phase when a tank took too much damage after an alleged lag spike on one of the healers computers. I am yet to see proof.

Third attempt was messy but some great tanking by Atlassia allowed a recovery that will be talked about for eons. Not quite as epic as the effort on Icehowl but definitely impressive. We moved in to phase three with two big adds still on the floor and a bunch of whelps. Atlassia picked up Ony and most of the whelps while Furgin tanked the two big adds. We had some decent DPS so the adds went down pretty quick and some careful taunts brought the whelps off Atlassia (who was receiving some awesome heals it must be said). Once the adds were down, Ony herself burnt pretty quick. I only remember her getting off two fears after that before she was toast.

Notes

  • Boorunn subbed in
  • Deadheart didn't show
  • Got first encounter down on third attempt

Coming prepared is all well and good, but I don't think we should raise expectations that reading about the fight on the web translates to being able to beat an encounter, even if we're over-geared for it. I'd expect reading up on the fight to replace the "Luke explains the fight to us before we start" step, not the "wipe the first few times we try to put those ideas into practice".

Totally agree, and I'd also like to point out that reading up on the fight without seeing the fight can be totally pointless. Some fights are hard to put in words.

On the other hand, we want to hit encounters that we aren't over geared for. Say we have nine people set for a ten man raid, and one guild member is asking where the entrance is compared to a pug who wants to come that says they know the fight, who do I pick?

We separated the casual group and the progression group for a reason, if we want another casual raid night, organise one, ill come to that with bells on, but we aren't going to clear stuff unless we are over geared for it.

    Congrats on the down!

Northrend Beasts really has it all in terms of an encounter.
