Luke(Thatrayna) and Paul(Mehemet) have both spoken to me in person about setting up a progression team. To help communicate that idea to the rest of us I am going to write up some notes here for comment.

Why?

Why do this? We have to RAID teams already and tend to struggle for numbers on the second night as it is. How is another team going to help?

The feeling is:

  • We aren't progressing fast enough
  • We want to raid with our main's more
  • We want team consistency
  • We want a more focused team, a team that is committed to the two nights a week

This isn't a "better" team, its just a two night a week team.
This isn't a different "progression" team, its just a two night a week team.
This isn't an "elite player" team, just a two night a week team.

Again?

Haven't we tried this before? Wasn't there a progression team setup in the past? Didn't it fail because no one signed up?

To get around this, the idea is to recruit inside the guild first, then from outside the guild to fill the numbers.

How does this differ from our current "progression" runs?

Not much, its just the same team two nights a week and with a little bit more commitement about making that team so we can be closer to the same team each week.

The Proposal

  • Form a 10 man team that raids two nights a week. Its been suggested that it might be Thursday/Sunday.
  • Recruit extra people to fill up the team.
  • Kill the Lich King and his Possee.

My Views

I like the idea of creating a team with a bit more focus but not at the cost of raiding with my friends. If this team was created it will probably force our other team(s) back down to just Monday nights. So I would be worried about how it would effect our team bacon/cheese rotations. I wouldnt join if it left those teams short or if the nights conflicted.

Outstanding Questions

  • How do we recruit publicly without being lame?
  • How do we do this without losing the close knit feel of the guild?
  • Do you like the smell of shit?

Please leave commments/questions/expressions of interest etc.

I won't ask if you like the smell of it.

Great to hear that you are doing well. We're still having fun in ICC. Looking forward to having you back (smile)

I can not commit to two nights a week. I can probably commit to three nights every two weeks. I am concerned that the formation of a progression team that I can not commit to would leave me stuck doing 6/12 for the rest of the expansion.

On the other hand, I'm encouraged by the fact that even when we had a progression team working on ToC, it was the casual team that downed Anub first. (smile)

I hate the terms "progression team" and "casual team" its stupid. Both teams are there to do the business.

I suspect most people can't commit to two nights a week. And for most they will still want to raid on Mondays so it means raiding three nights a week. Too much for most people I suspect.

If we are supposed to take Monday nights seriously, we should focus on one character only for Monday runs (as much as possible). Unnecessarily switching alts doesn't help us progress (I'm not counting Furgin switching to Zunuz last week, since we needed a healer).

For example, (and I say this with a great deal of respect for Luke, since he contributes a lot to our raids plus he gave me lots of loot last night (smile)), but we may have downed Rotface last night if we had Zunoz rather than Thorange. I'm not singling Luke out, but it's just the most recent example I can think of.

I also cannot commit to two nights a week, although I can be available for a Thursday every now and again.

I am in the opposite situation to Charles. Although I can commit to any night (and any number of nights), with the current structure I am limited to one guild raid night per week till the expansion. A situation which is frustrating to say the least when raids get cancelled (something which has happened more than once since the Thursday group was established). Unlike those who play multiple toons, a single cancellation means that I have to wait 2 weeks from one Guild raid to the next. This poses a problem for me.

One of the issues that we face when we tackle new and more difficult content is that it takes a while to get it right. Having a consistent group helps as does increasing the frequency of attempts with that same group. Not only do people get to know their role better but those characters become better geared more quickly. Lolz gives a great example of how our current efforts are being diluted by our structure.

Personally, I am not fussed as to what the days are, whether we run a 2 night and a 1 night group or just a 2 night group that has a character rotation attached etc. What I am really looking for is a raid structure that:

          • Allows us to see more content
          • Prioritises a core group of committed characters (toons, not players) so as to add strength to the whole group - Which doesn't mean there can't be a player rotation but does mean that we try to play the same toon where possible
          • Doesn't end up with no raid (for me) for 2 weeks if one session has to be cancelled
          • Rarely has a raid cancelled
          • Allows me to raid more than once a week on Mehemet

I know its been frustrating to say the least with last weeks raid being cancelled. A few things to keep in mind so it stays in perspective.

            • Torty was taking an extended AFK break and therefore hasn't been available, this meant we were short a healer. I had this spot covered two weeks in a row with Zaph but wasn't able to contact him for last week.
            • In this particular case, Swoon could not make it.
            • I base the attendence on the sign up sheet. The night of the raid only had 4 green ticks on it, one of which was mine and I was very sick that night and wanted to go to bed early (little did i know..). I know its a pain to log into the web site to sign up so ill take a more pro-active approach from now on.

I'll also comment on your points.

Allows us to see more content

There isn't much content after what we are doing. Four more bosses in ICC and RS. We are working our way through ICC and doing it regularly, albeit slowly.

Prioritises a core group of committed characters (toons, not players) so as to add strength to the whole group - Which doesn't mean there can't be a player rotation but does mean that we try to play the same toon where possible

This is in place already, but perhaps needs to be more formalised. Usually when I try and formalise anything (ie: this is the thursday team, these toons, every week) people get cold feet. This has happened a few times in the past. I'll try again. Get active on the website so we can generate some momentum. I'm looking at you paul and luke, you two are the two that are really pushing for this, lets make it happen.

Doesn't end up with no raid (for me) for 2 weeks if one session has to be cancelled

            Rarely has a raid cancelled

We don't cancel that often. I think only once from two teams since the new split has taken place. Thats pretty good if you ask me.

Allows me to raid more than once a week on Mehemet

Do you mean, two raids in this team or some structure about what you can and can't raid so you can safetly pug a raid without effecting your team lock?

Ok i should probably comment since i started this discussion sort of. first of all there is alot more content then we have seen. we have cleared nax, toc and icc 9/12 all on norm, lets say 12 bosses in nax that makes 24 bosses if you add the available bosses you get 56 including heroics, so we have killed less than half of available content and i havent included RS, or even ulduar in that so add more. about 2 months ago when we downed putricide i was talking to a group that had just gotten to LK they are now 8/12 heroic. So our progression is not there. As to last week taking thorange it is right we would have downed an extra boss. However i have been raiding for i would say 18 months without really anychance of any gear just helping to try to progress and that is not happening so me taking undergeared characters is just reverseing rolls (and i realise there are some other toons in this position and i am not saying it unfair cause i have enjoyed it) but now i really want to get to end game content and end game is not icc norm, that is far from it. Personally i feel the people who want to raid to progress and get achievements, should be able to group together and if there arent enough then i can easily find more, and i am willing to take responsibility for this. If that would leave the others that want to log in a couple nights a week to join and raid 1 night a week and they can make it monday or thursday.

I can commit to a couple of days during the week, but the weekend will always be an iffy proposition.
