The announcement that in the next patch you will be able to trade Frozen Orbs for useful things like Frost Lotus and higher-level orbs has increased the number of orb ninjas by an order of magnitude.
I've started hitting this macro just before the last boss in heroic pugs.

I have been rolling need for a while now. It's stupid that there is an option, for stuff like this, generic materials and/or currency should just be need and nothing else.

I don't think needing frozen orbs makes someone a ninja. Apparently it's customary on some servers to need by default on frozen orbs.
That being said, stating it up front is a good idea to avoid confusion. Up til now, I've just been waiting until everyone else rolls. If someone needs, I need, otherwise I roll greed.

This used to be my strategy as well. Either that or I'd hit Greed and just grumble a little if I was unlucky enough to be grouped with someone who needed the orb.
Since the announcement that the orbs were going to be useful again, though, I've seen an order of magnitude more needing, often from people who waited until everyone else had already rolled. To me, that spells ninja.

"often from people who waited until everyone else had already rolled" — I agree there. That's the act of a ninja. However, I've also seen the person who is the first person to roll, roll need. If someone rolls greed after that, I don't think they have any cause to complain.

Loot rules differ across servers.
Took me a while to get used to Blackrock loot rules as Destromath's rules was to need anything BoE.
Frozen Orbs are useful for everyone and everything now.
Just need them.
